WHISTLER, British Columbia -- Someone had to be first, and it was Tony Benshoof.

Overlooking a labyrinth that claimed the life of one of his competitors a day earlier, Benshoof, the top U.S. medal hope in men's luge, drew a breath of mountain Thomas sabo charms air, secured the visor over his face and dropped down this elevator shaft of ice not knowing what to expect.

He glided to the bottom, slower but safer. And that's all that mattered.

The Olympic sliding track, slightly modified to make it less perilous and more than 5 mph slower for racers, reopened Saturday less than 24 hours after Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died in a horrifying crash not likely to be forgotten by anyone who witnessed it on Blackcomb Mountain or on television.

For Benshoof, there was no time to mourn.

"Unfortunately, there was a terrible tragedy," said Benshoof, a three-time Olympian competing with at least three herniated discs, plus an aching foot from a brush with the Whistler track wall on Friday. "But at the end of the day we have a competition to go through, and I tried to put it all out of my head."

That was almost impossible.

Reminders of Kumaritashvili's death seemed everywhere -- from the reconfigured final curve and raised wall, to the black tape stuck to the helmets of some athletes. Flowers were left by the base of the steel beam that he struck near the 16th turn. There was also a card with the inscription, "Just like gold, your dream will live forever."

A moment of silence was held before the first heat of the men's competition in memory of Kumaritashvili. His photo was displayed on a video scoreboard.

"It's still fresh in our hearts," said Shiva Keshavan from India. "We're not able to compete with that same joy."

Kumaritashvili's teammate, Levan Gureshidze, did not race. He was on the official start list for the first heat but withdrew.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge attended the competition with Vancouver organizing chief John Furlong.

Before Benshoof pushed down the starting ramp and cleanly navigated through the 16-turn course, luge officials announced the men would begin at the women's start, a decision they hoped would reduce speeds and lessen the chance for accidents.

The men began their two-day competition with a clean first heat, with all 38 racers completing their runs.

But even to the untrained eye, it was obvious the lugers were crawling compared to the zooming speeds they reached in the first days of practice.

Not everyone seemed happy.

"It's slow," said Austria's Manuel Pfister, who was clocked at almost 96 mph on Thursday. "It's completely different. Yesterday, I was able to slide with the medal ranks, today it's another race. It's difficult for me. Maybe it's now too easy."

The decision to change the start's location seemed to have the desired effect during men's training, the first session on the track after Kumaritashvili's terrifying crash. None of the athletes broke 90 mph after speeds routinely surpassed 95 mph earlier in the week.

"The changes that they made were positive," Benshoof said. "I didn't notice them going down the track itself. Of course, now, with a lower

2010 Winter Olympics Canadian

VANCOUVER -- Don't be fooled by Switzerland's struggle against Belarus. The Swiss are ready for another shot at the top-ranked Americans.

Switzerland had a tighter-than-expected game Tuesday, a 3-2 shootout victory that sent the country into the men's Olympic hockey quarterfinals against the undefeated U.S. squad.

Goalie Jonas Hiller of the Anaheim Ducks stopped Sergei Kostitsyn in the third round of the shootout for Switzerland. Hiller made the winning save after the puck slid off the stick of the Montreal Canadiens forward. Hiller allowed only one goal after letting a bad one go through in the opening minute.

"I tried to stay on my feet as long as possible," Hiller said, referring to the final shot. "I thought he was going to deke me. I was able to close the corner down, and he ran out of time, ran out of space. It was a great feeling -- sure better feeling at the end of the game than how I started it."

Thomas Deruns and Romano Lemm scored shootout goals for Switzerland, which will take on the Americans today. The U.S. beat replica hublot watches the Swiss 3-1 in the Olympic opener a week earlier.

"We're coming at an all-NHL team for the third time. We feel comfortable," Swiss coach Ralph Krueger said. "We were definitely too timid in the first half of that game. We gave them too much space.

"It's more about being less timid and getting into their faces. I see them as the most physical-playing team in the tournament. We need to bring an absolutely perfect team game to even have a chance."

Julien Sprunger and former NHL forward Hnat Domenichelli scored power-play goals for Switzerland, which earned the No. 8 seed after forcing Canada into a shootout and beating Norway in overtime during preliminary play.

"I think you can say Belarus and Switzerland are on the same level," the Canadian-born Domenichelli said. "We found a way to come out on top. Now, we have a chance to get with the big boys."

Andrei Mezin made 40 saves before the shootout, but couldn't complete Belarus' upset. Dmitri Meleshko scored the team's only goal in the tiebreaker.

"In shootouts, it's just a lottery. Unfortunately, we lost," Belarus coach Mikhail Zakharov said through an interpreter. "I have no regrets for how we played (in the tournament) with the amount of time we had together -- three practices and two games. There's always a side that's not happy enough."

Belarus, seeded ninth, was missing much of its usual energetic fan base because this qualification matchup wasn't determined until Sunday -- after tickets were sold. That didn't deter the team best known for its upset of Sweden in the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.

Aleksei Kalyuzhny gave Belarus the lead 59 seconds into the game, and Konstantin Zakharov tied it 2-2 in the second period to back Mezin. Mezin was solid in his second game, following a 34-save effort in a 4-2 loss to Sweden. He stopped five shots in the 10- minute overtime.

CANADA 8, GERMANY 2: And now, it's Canada vs. Russia in the Olympic hockey game that everyone expected.

Jarome Iginla scored two goals as a revived Canadian hockey team beat Germany 8-2, setting up a superpower showdown against Russia in the quarterfinals Wednesday -- or four days sooner than predicted for a game that seems better suited for the finals.

2 men escape after Saltlick lu

Two men escaped serious injury Wednesday morning when the roof of a building at a Fayette County lumber operation collapsed under the weight of ice and snow.

Brothers Ronald and Ken Ritenour were inside the building at Ritenour Lumber Co. in the Saltlick village of Melcroft when the roof fell in at 11 a.m., said township fire Chief Max Gales.

"They heard it coming," Gales said.

Ken Ritenour was able to escape through a door of the 80-by-150- foot building, Gales said.

Ronald Ritenour "dove beside a high-lift."

"That's the only thing that saved him," Gales said.

Both had walked to another building at the complex by the time rescue personnel arrived.

Ronald Ritenour was transported to Excela Health Frick Hospital in Mt. Pleasant for treatment of rib and head pain, Gales said.

Excela spokeswoman Robin Jennings said yesterday that she had no information about Ritenour.

"The building is totaled," Gates said.

He said he spoke to company president Paul Ritenour yesterday.

"He is going to rebuild it," Gates said.

He said workers were trying to cover and protect "thousands of dollars" worth of finished wood stored inside the collapsed building.

Paul Ritenour could not be reached for comment last night.

Gales said Normalville and Chestnut Ridge fire departments and Mutual Aid Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

"We had calls from other (fire) departments offering (help) if needed," Gales said. "We really appreciate it. If one had been trapped in there, it would have been a nightmare."

According to its Web site, the company was founded in 1960 by William D. and Ida Ritenour. They added dry kilns to the saw mill in 1979 and a moulding shop in 1991.

Paul Ritenour became company president in 1993, operating the business with his brothers. In 2002, he purchased the operation.

The business produces hardwood flooring, paneling and mouldings for residences, contractors and schools, according to the Web site.

Yesterday's roof collapse was the latest such incident since the Feb. 5 snowstorm and its aftermath. It was the first in which anyone was injured.

Farmington fire Chief Brian Van Sickle said his firefighters have responded to four roof collapses since Sunday, including one yesterday at Haines Butcher Shop on Wirsing Road.

Heavy snow felled the roof of the Clip on charms 30 by 60 foot pole building, trapping tractors, coolers and other implements of the business, which typically butchers pigs, cows and deer in the fall, Van Sickle said. Firefighters helped owner Paul Haines take out some of the moveable items and also cleared snow from the roofs of two other buildings on his property.

On Tuesday, the roof collapsed at Demco Excavating in Wharton, burying two dump trucks in the rubble. On Sunday, snow caused roofs on two buildings at Cesarino Trucking to cave in, burying at least one tractor-trailer.

"We're going to be scaling ladders here at the fire hall to clear off our roof," Van Sickle said, adding that more than 50 inches of snow has fallen this month in his area with more falling every day.

Beng Hee wants men's profile r

ONG Beng Hee has called on the CIMB Kuala Lumpur Open organisers to take the next step and raise the men's tournament to Super Series level.

In a coup for the organisers, current World No 1 Ramy Ashour will be making his second appearance at the March links of london 15-20 tournament but it is the first time the men's top-ranked player will play in the KL Open since its inception in 1999.

While the women's version consistently attracts the world's best due to its Gold status, Beng Hee believes a similar move on the men's side to the PSA Super Series will guarantee the top PSA Tour players make KL a regular stop.

"CIMB and SRAM (the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia) have worked hard in making the KL Open became as big as it is.

"But it must not remain stagnant. It could be one of the major tournaments if they make it a Super Series event.

"For this to happen they'll have to bring in more sponsors and not just rely on CIMB," said World No 19 Beng Hee after the presentation of Berjaya Times Square (BTS) as the tournament venue sponsor for the fifth straight year in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Presently, the men's tournament is a five-star affair offering US$52,500 (RM178,000) in total prize money while the women's event offers US$53,500 (RM181,000).

Beng Hee, however, admitted that it would make Clip on charms the KL Open more difficult to win for him and 20th-ranked Azlan Iskandar.

"For sure it would be a nightmare for Azlan and if all the top players come here. As it is with Ramy coming now, it is getting tougher each year."

Belting dream

DAVID HAYE is on a mad mission to unify the four different world heavyweight title belts before he hangs up his gloves in two years' time.

Haye defends his WBA version of the heavyweight championship against former champion John Ruiz at the MEN Arena in Manchester on April 3 and then he wants to take on the other champions.

"I want two more hard years in the boxing business to bring all the belts together and give the fight fans a champion they can recognise," said Haye.

replica tag heruer watches

"I turned pro to win the world heavyweight title and that is what I've done - now I'm on a mission to unify.

"The heavyweight title has been held by some great fighters in the last 30 years but it seems there is always more than one fighter claiming to be the champion. "Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield all had their time as the number one, but it has been a mess for about 10 years.

"I could take the easy route like the Klitschko brothers and fight fat no-hopers and make easy defence after easy defence.

"I want to get in with the other champions, in real fights, for real money and hopefully restore pride to the division."

During the last 18 months Haye and the Klitschko brothers - Wladimir who is the WBO and IBF champion and Vitali Clip on charms who holds the WBC version - have been at each other's throats.

Haye was due to fight both Klitschkos last year but the fights collapsed in acrimony, and Haye instead beat the socalled Beast from the East, Nikolai Valuev to win the title last November.

"They're an angry pair of brothers with some issues outside the ring," added Haye. "They've both tried grabbing me on the safe side of the ropes, but offered me peanuts to fight them inside the ring - that makes no sense to me!

"They have the other belts and if they have any pride left they will have to fight me - it's as simple as that."

The fight against super veteran Ruiz was agreed before Haye toppled Valuev and it is a fight that Haye knows will be harder than some insiders are predicting.

"Ruiz is an old-school tough guy and in 12 world heavyweight title fights he has never been stopped," said Haye.

"My aim is to ruin his record and take him out in spectacular style to entertain the thousands of fans inside the MEN.

"I'm not taking the fight lightly because I know how hard Ruiz is, but this will be a celebration and a homecoming to thank the fans for backing me against the Beast."

The Haye v Ruiz fight is the first in a series of massive fights involving the top British boxers that taking place before the end of May.

World champions Carl Froch and Amir Khan will defend their titles and Ricky Hatton returns, possibly at the City of Manchester stadium.

Haye said: "This is a great time for British boxing and I'lll make everybody proud and kickoff the good times with a stunning knockout."

Beavers take conference title

Correspondent

Thomas sabo charms

FARMINGTON -- In the long and storied history of University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball there was one accomplishment the Beavers had never achieved, that is until Saturday afternoon.

UMF won its first ever men's basketball conference title, defeating Castleton State College 65-51 before a standing-room only crowd of 542 at Dearborn Gymnasium.

With the win the Beavers receive the North Atlantic Conference's bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament. The announcement of the tournament field will be made Monday morning.

In traditional UMF style, the Beavers (14-11) broke down Castleton playing exceptional defense in the second half to break open a close game. UMF led 35-32 at halftime but held the Spartans (17-10) to just 29 percent from the floor in the second half.

"This was a great group of young men who never gave up on the season," said UMF coach Dick Meader, who has been at the Beaver heac coach since 1993. "We started the season 0-8 and they worked extremely hard and believed in themselves and what we were doing."

DJ Gerrish opened links of london the second half taking a nice pass from Eric Lelansky (12 points, 8 assists) for a layup. Tournament MVP Josh Tanguay put back a rebound of his own missed shot, then followed with another inside basket on a Lelansky assist as the Beavers took momentum.

"We are both very hard nosed teams," Tanguay said. "Today, we were a little bit more disciplined then they were. We had a really good combination on the inside and outside, everyone on the team had a hand in it.

"There have been a lot of very good players and good people go through this school. I'm so happy to share it with the team, especially the way we did it."

Dan Kane's 3-pointer at 14 minutes, 7 seconds pushed the Beavers lead to 46-36. UMF hit eight 3-pointers, including five in the first 10 minutes by guard Andrew Dean, who finished with a game-high 17 points.

At every opportunity Castleton moved the ball quickly up court in transition to force a fast-paced game in an attempt to wear down the Beavers. UMF, replica breitling watches however, was able to withstand the pace.

"The running game helped us get out and get into transition," Lelansky said. "We got things going early and started finding some easy baskets."

UMF sustained its 10-point lead throughout most of the second half. Spartan Jared Paul's layup cut the lead to 59-51 with 1:47 left, but Castleton didn't score again while UMF's Eric Taylor (15 points, 15 rebounds) converted six straight from the free-throw line to secure the title.

Derrick Faragon paced the Spartans offensive effort with a team-high 12 points while teammates Mike Knight and Paul scored 10 points each.
