The court heard how Stainthorpe, 29, the former manager, was facing disciplinary action before the theft and feared she could lose her job.

David Maddison, prosecuting at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court, said that on December 12, contrary to the shop's policy, Stainthorpe asked an assistant to leave, then took [pounds]1,400 from the till.

MrMaddison said they used a wooden mallet to smash a window allowing Ogden, who had been briefed by Stainthorpe, to slip in.

Once inside, Ogden went to the safe and stole [pounds]1,600, included charity money the store had been collecting, [pounds]50 in an envelope marked Cash for Kids and [pounds]18 in an envelope marked Sophie Attay - a cancer stricken youngster from Birtley, near Chester-leStreet.

Mr Andrews said: "Use of drugs such as ecstasy and the like, which previously had been confined to weekend use, had become something of a problem."

He added: "Being in debt to local drug dealers is in no way comparable to being in debt to the bank."
