Junkie stalked elderly women i

THIS cowardly junkie has been caged after robbing lone elderly women during a three week campaign of crime in a bid to pay 5050 RGB Controller LD-CON-12-M off drugs debts.

Jermaine Humberstone mugged seven women - including a recently widowed Parkinson's disease sufferer - as he stalked the streets of Sheffield looking for easy targets.

He dragged at least two of the women to the ground before stripping them of their handbags or shopping, and left another so traumatised she refuses to leave her house during the evenings.

Jailing him for six years at Sheffield Crown Court, Judge Trevor Barber said: "You set out to rob old ladies because you owed debts to drug dealers. The ladies were not in a position to fight back.

"Not only was your behaviour criminal it was also cowardly. They have been frightened out of their wits by what you did to them."

Humberstone first struck on August 22 last year when he robbed 60-year-old Eva Wells as she walked along St Mary's Lane in Ecclesfield.

The following day the heroin and crack cocaine addict pushed a 53-year-old Parkinson's sufferer to the ground on Herries Road, Shirecliffe and stole her Tesco shopping bags.

On August 30, Humberstone, 22, attacked 79-year-old Joan Firth on Hucklow Road, Firth Park and stole her purse, containing [pounds sterling]30 cash and keys.

During the struggle, Mrs Firth scratched Humberstone's face and DNA evidence found under her finger nails was later matched to him, the court heard.

On the following day Humberstone, of Scowerdons Drive, Hackenthorpe, robbed an 80-year-old of a purse on Mason Laithe Road, Shiregreen - and was later arrested but was bailed.

He went on to attack three more women - an 82-year-old who had recently lost her husband of 39 years and women aged 57 and 78 - in Shiregreen, Firth Park and Handsworth.

The thug dragged the 57-year-old along the pavement as she desperately tried to cling on to her bags, the court heard.

He committed the final robbery with friend and fellow crack and heroin addict Nicholas Madden, 31, of Leppings Lane, Hillsborough.

Humberstone, who only had a few previous convictions for shoplifting and motoring offences, was later arrested after police pieced together his description and the description of his car with the DNA evidence.

He eventually pleaded guilty to seven robberies and one burglary, and asked for a further two robberies and 20 burglaries to be taken into consideration by the court.

Madden, who has a long history of committing robberies and burglaries, admitted one robbery and one burglary charge. He was jailed for six years because the offences were aggravated by his long criminal career.

After the case, Det Con John Briers, from Attercliffe CID's Robbery Unit, said: "This was a particularly nasty series of robberies on elderly women, some of whom have been shattered by their ordeal." Humberstone's catalogue of crime
