WOMEN are to get free bells to attach to their purses to help raise the alarm if a thief strikes.

Police have given away bells to shoppers in Caernarfon, Waunfawr, Bontnewydd, Felinheli and Bethel.

North Wales Neighbourhood Policing Team are using the scheme to raise awareness and to deter purse and handbag thieves in a move funded by the Crimebeat scheme.

Police and Community Support Officer Michael Sambrook, who handed out the bells outside Morrisons in Caernarfon on Saturday afternoon, said: "The bells are designed to be attached to the zip of a purse and act as a deterrent to a thief and alert the purse owner should it be moved unknowingly.

"Purse thefts are opportunistic crimes and members of the public need to be aware of the actions they should take to minimise the risks.

"The response from the public was really good and it was a great opportunity for us to give generic advice on how to keep personal belongings safe while out Christmas shopping."

Police tips for keeping your purse safe include never letting your handbag out of sight, carrying it in front of you especially if you're walking
embroidered patches through a shop. Also avoid carrying large amounts of cash and if your purse or wallet is in a bag, ensure that the bag is closed. Don't leave your purse or wallet in your shopping basket, trolley, on restaurant or coffee tables, or on shop counters.
